Muriel’s Wedding
UKTV Gold tonight at 9.00pm
Having been invited to five nuptial celebrations already this year, I’m tempted to stay in this weekend and watch UKTV Gold’s Wedding Weekend just so I can compare and contrast. The channel promises to showcase a colourful array of crazy getting hitched scenarios from a host of classic shows including The Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, The Royle Family and Only Fools and Horses, and, believe me, many of the wedding events I’ve been to have been just as bizarre.
The highlight of this themed weekend is the Australian gem Muriel’s Wedding. Yes I know this was on BBC 1 last weekend, but I missed it, and anyway I could easily watch this movie time and time again for its intensely moving bittersweet story and Abba-heavy soundtrack. Like Muriel, I am a firm believer that you need at least one Abba song at a wedding. Whether it’s overlong speeches, unsatisfactory food, inebriated guests, unruly children or just the inevitable family frictions, you can’t please everyone at such events. But stick an Abba song on and you’ll at least get all your guests in a happy place for its duration.
I wish I had a friend called Muriel, then I’d have an excuse to say “You’re terrible, Muriel” all the time.
