Last month I went to an exhibition about Jack the Ripper at London’s Museum in Docklands, which is running until November. It was chillingly brilliant. I was in there for ages. Loads of the original documents are there to see in the flesh, so to speak, including the infamous Dear Boss letter and gory post-mortem pictures of the victims. The exhibition also showcases all the many film and TV dramatisations of this horrific, but strangely compelling, story and you can’t help but come out with all sort of theories about who Jack might have been.

He was probably some insignificant and long-forgotten Whitechapel resident, but it’s far more exciting to theorise about him being Queen Victoria’s doctor, or her grandson, or Walter Sickert or Lewis Carroll, to name just a few of the notable names tarred with the Ripper brush.

I doubt that Christopher Plummer’s Sherlock Holmes will throw up any new ideas as he investigates the case of Jack the Ripper in this tale tonight, but I’m hoping it will be chillingly entertaining.
