Desperately Seeking Susan

Madonna turns 50 on Saturday, and there’s no doubt about it – she looks fabulous. However, I do think it’s crazy when people exclaim that she doesn’t look 50. What does 50 look like? Surely the signs of ageing are influenced by lifestyle, genetics, diet and dress-sense. Madonna has always looked after her body, always wears amazing clothes and therefore has always looked good. Also by famously reinventing her image every few years she’s craftily distracted the media and public from focusing on any subtle changes that might have occurred to her physically. Genius.
The chameleon star was 27 and in her Like a Virgin phase when she starred as the punky, streetwise Susan in this 1980s comedy with Rosanna Arquette. It was her first foray into the movies, and the song Get Into the Groove that features in the film was her first number one single in the UK. This is my favourite Madonna movie, and I guess that might be because she is, to all intents and purposes, playing herself.
