La Vie en Rose
On Sky Movies Premiere this afternoon at 3.35 pm (and tomorrow afternoon at 5.35pm, and 5.05pm on Friday)
When I first saw this film, on an overnight flight from New York to London, I gave up on it, finding it too disjointed and visually dark. It wasn’t until the film secured its two Academy Award wins on top of its four BAFTAs and Golden Globe that I decided I should probably give it another try. How glad am I that I did? It’s an amazing movie. Visually rich, musically emotive, this powerful and moving portrait of Edith Piaf’s tragic life, portrayed brilliantly by Marion Cotillard, had me in tears by the end. How had I got it so wrong on first viewing?
Well, here’s how: a cinematic movie never translates well onto a tiny screen, but without a fully-functioning brightness button, it’s doomed. Add to that the dodgy headphones I’d been given that cut out every five minutes, deafening me with this noise. Getting the picture? Add to this the film’s 140 mins running time and the fact I was on an overnight flight. Hardly surprising eh? I’ve vowed never to watch an in-flight movie again.
