News Muse – bye bye Isaac Hayes, hello Lara Croft

This week started off a bit sombre as the world was told about the death of Isaac Hayes. The legendary soul singer/actor died from a stroke at his home on Sunday. He was found next to his treadmill, which I’m sure is giving plenty of people a new excuse not to exercise.

Hayes leaves behind a great body of work but for me he will always be singing the Theme from Shaft or spreading the love as South Park’s Chef.

I’m gonna spread my love by giving you a recipe for chocolate salty balls, a Swedish classic that I loved as a kid. I’m sure it would’ve made Chef proud.

More on death, or rather, killing people. Lara Croft is really really good at killing people! Although this is of course hardly news to anyone. Except to me. I watched Lara Croft: Tomb Raider for the first time the day before yesterday, and to my surprise I was glued to the sofa. I loved the action-packed blockbuster in an argggh-girl-power kinda way – I’m thinking Charlie’s Angels, not Spice Girls.

So (here come the actual news) when they announced the ‘new Lara Croft’ on Monday, I wasn’t impressed. Some 23-year-old Croydon receptionist called Alison Carroll, who does gymnastics and studies archaeology will be travelling around the world promoting the latest Tomb Raider video game, Underworld. Hey, perhaps they can send her to Georgia to sort out the Russian issue!

I’m sorry, but nobody can beat Angelina Jolie. Besides, Carroll just isn’t large enough…of a personality, I mean.

The new (but not improved) Lara Croft

Meanwhile, Angelina’s large but not so pretty ex-husband, Billy Bob Thornton, was making headlines this week, announcing that he will be playing Freddy Krueger in a remake of the 1984 horror classic A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Well, at least the make-up department will have an easy time on that project.
