Couch Potato Pickings – Jailhouse Rock

On TCM this afternoon at 3pm

In case you hadn’t heard, Madonna turns 50 today, so happy birthday Madge. I thought about picking a Madonna film to celebrate this momentous milestone, but I did that earlier in the week. Anyway, the only relevant movie that’s on today is Arthur and the Invisibles (Sky Movies Family at 3.15) and that’s hardly a fitting tribute to the 50-year-old style icon since her role is only a voice part.

So while I could indulge the mummy mania that’s still in the air by watching the 2nd film in The Mummy franchise (The Mummy Returns) on ITV1 today, I’ve decided not to. Instead I’ve chosen a film to mark the day that Elvis died 31 years ago.

This was The King’s third film role and the title song was a number one hit in the UK for three weeks in 1957. It also, more recently, scored number 67 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest songs of all Time. Test your knowledge of it with this quiz here. I scored appallingly, but then this is not my favourite Elvis song.
