It HAS to be The Long Hot Summer, Paul Newman is sex on a stick in it!!

  3. TMA1 says:

My favourite Paul Newman films are The Hustler (1961) in which Newman was nominated for Best Actor, Hud (1963) where he won the Oscar for Best Actor, The Drowning Pool (1975) and Cool Hand Luke (1967) which was yet another Oscar nomination.

He was a fine and very versatile actor able to shine in both action, and dramatic roles and with a gift for comedy, but later in his career could show his skills in playing roles that were much darker and frankly quite nasty, in films like The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) and Road to Perdition (2002). He even shone with a voice over role in the Pixar computer animation Cars (2006).

He shunned the Hollywood scene and was devoted to his 2nd wife actress Joanna Woodward, his first wife Jackie Witte, died of cancer 1958. When asked about infidelity, he quipped, “Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?”.

Paul Newman was a genuinely nice guy who just so happed to be a great Hollywood movie star. He also made a successful brand of salad dressing and gave away the profits to charity. He was almost to good to be true. Paul Newman will be sorely missed, but of course, will live forever in his films. I liked him a lot not just because of his acting but because he was an all-round good egg (er, apologies for Cool Hand Luke reference pun)

Has to be Butch Cassidy even though it wasn’t his best film – it came at a critical time in my adolescence! (Quintessential handsome older man…)

  5. kevturbo says:

Cool Hand Luke is the greatest. That egg eating scene is surely one of cinema’s all time classics!

  6. Pixie says:

I remember watching Çat on a Hot Tin Roof on TV with my Dad. No doubt he was watching Elizabeth Taylor however I was transfixed by the ice blue of Paul Newman’s eyes. Absolutely stunning! Though he made many other movies, many of which I’ve seen, the memory and impact of that viewing has always stayed with me.

  7. angieo says:

Cool Hand Luke by a long shot!

  8. TLG says:

My favourite is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I first saw it as a young girl and it made me both laugh and cry.

He will be missed – a real Hollywood icon

  9. Turner says:

Your photos show Paul in a number of memorable roles he played over the years. My personal favorite is his real life role as family man and corporate CEO.
How about a photo of Paul and Joanne or maybe a photo of his salad dressing. Happy marriage and corporate profits going to charity. We should all be so fortunate.

  10. Simonr says:

Apart from the classics – hustler, cool hand luke (the emotion in his voice while singing plastic jesus is amazing), butch cassidy and the sundance kid and the sting – i have to admit i also really liked slap shot and the secret war of harry frigg when i was child but haven’t seen them in 15 years.

  11. Marc Mordey says:

Felt incredibly sad about the death of Paul Newman, but incredibly glad for his life and career; we watched Butch Cassidy on Sunday night, in honour of this truly iconic actor and man. How amazing to have impacted upon so many people, the world over.

  12. Jason Best says:

Some great suggestions here, but I have to admit, Simon, that I’d never even heard of The Secret War of Harry Frigg before seeing your comment. (For those similarly unware of this film, it’s a 1969 comedy starring Newman as an accident-prone soldier – or so I have just learned.) I hope to catch up with it one day.

  13. cool hand luke says:

i saw someone up there likes me when i was at uni and thought it was pretty cool. aside from the classic stuff, i liked his performance in message in a bottle too

  14. Helen R L says:

The death of Paul Newman is indeed a very sad thing. I always admired his piercing blue eyes and handsome good looks! He seemed to be a true family man and completely devoted to his wife and family. “The Verdict” from 1982 is one of his best in my opinion, but I do like “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” as well. A great man and actor who will be sadly missed!

  15. Andrew Shepherd says:

What about the film that made him – “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (1956), a brilliant performance, all energy and exuberance. Less controlled than other performances but one hell of a performance, especially as he was cast against type.
Favourite quote: “Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure when his eyes turned brown” We have lost a giant.

  16. gavin says:

If I had to pick one it would be Butch Cassidy – one of the best endings to a film ever.
Favourite Paul Newman fact? He was only 5′ 9 and a half, so I’m taller than him! Result.

  17. Clare says:

“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” may not have been his best film, but the bicycle scene is one of cinema’s iconic moments and how I best remember him.
