Many people are under the misconception that the character Shirley MacLaine plays in this Bob Fosse musical is a prostitute. Charity is in fact a dance hall hostess or taxi dancer – a professional dancer who dances for money (as Tina Turner explains in her famous Private Dancer song). Read more about the profession here.

This feelgood film is the perfect Saturday matinee. Not only is MacLaine great in the role, but it also features that fabulous belt it out number If My Friends Could See Me Now and Big Spender, which was a chart hit for that other singing Shirley – Bassey.
