French director François Ozon’s first film in English is an overripe period drama starring Romola Garai as a as a young woman in turn-of-the-20th-century England who dreams of becoming a great author. Despite her lack of talent, Angel’s florid romances become bestsellers, bringing her wealth and fame, and a handsome husband. Ozon films this saga with a straight face, but the overripe dialogue, dodgy back-projection and unrestrained acting all signal that he is smirking behind his hand. (Released 9th February.)
