News Muse | Sorcerers, vampires and the Vatican

Nicholas Cage’s latest project, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons this week. The set suffered not one, but two serious accidents in the last week, both involving car stunts.

The film, which is due out next summer, is shooting in New York City and it seems we can expect a lot of action-packed car chases, that is if they manage to capture them without the stuntmen and women crashing their vehicles into innocent bystanders.

Needless to say, one of the victims will be suing – all in the spirit of America.

The movie, in case you’re wondering, is based on the sequence from Disney’s Fantasia, which in turn is based on a poem by Goethe. Yet another mind-boggling script choice by the lovely Mr Cage then.

In the meantime, the Vatican seems to have made a complete U-turn as to their opinions on Ron Howard’s upcoming Da Vinci Code sequel Angels & Demons. In 2006, church officials labelled The Da Vinci Code “an offence against God” and when production on Angels & Demons began, the project immediately got the Holy cold shoulder.

Then, rather surprisingly, the review in Vatican official newspaper L’Osservatore Romano described the movie as “harmless entertainment” and went on to praise the accuracy of the reconstructions of Vatican buildings. That’s the crux though. The Vatican banned Ron Howard from filming in Rome’s churches, which is why they had to build replicas in the first place. The reason these were so accurate was thanks to secret detailed video footage of the originals done by crew disguising as tourists.

I can’t wait to see Angels & Demons when it comes out on Thursday. Any film that involves the Illuminati along with various conspiracy theories on a grand scale fascinates me.

Another director who’s landed himself in hot water is David Slade, who will be directing the third Twilight film – Eclipse. It recently came to light that he made some rather harsh remarks about the franchise in an interview last year. He apparently said he’d rather be shot than watch Twilight because being drunk or on acid wouldn’t be enough to dull the pain. Ouch! Then, just to dig that hole a little deeper, he also posted negative comments on Twitter.

Needless to say, to keep his job and the confidence of the fans, he quickly edited his blog and made an email apology on Twilightlexicon.com, one of the biggest fansites.

Ok, ok, David. We forgive you just this once. But don’t let it happen again! We’re watching you.
