Couch Potato Pickings: There’s Something About Mary

Showing on Film4 tonight at 9pm

If I had to pick one image from one film to sum up the gross-out genre, this would be it.

There’s Something About Mary: Cameron Diaz

Not only does Cameron, with her distinctive quiff, serve to remind us just how  vulgar this film’s comedy gets, but the image is also significant because this was the film that spawned a new generation of coarser gross-out movies. There’s no denying that toilet humour and gratuitous nudity had been defining the genre since the 1980s, but Mary set the standard for new levels of tastelessness, with fruit pastries taking on disturbing new levels of popularity the following year.
