Gallic heartthrobs Romain Duris (The Beat That My Heart Skipped) and Vanessa Paradis (aka Mrs Johnny Depp) make a splendid screen couple in Heartbreaker, a romantic comedy with a decidedly French twist.
Duris is Alex, a professional seducer who gets hired by third parties to break up unsuitable couples – which he does by turning his charm on full-beam until the woman in question buckles at the knees and realises that her current beau is unworthy of her.
Paradis is Juliette, an heiress whose father wants to thwart her impending marriage to her drippy English fiancé (played by This Life’s Andrew Lincoln).
Posing as Juliette’s new bodyguard, Alex steps in, but of course, things don’t exactly go according to plan…
Pascal Chaumeil’s film is undoubtedly silly and formulaic, but it has such charm and panache that – like Alex’s victims – you’re quite likely to fall for it all the same. The film’s hilarious but fond pastiche of Dirty Dancing (Alex learns the dance routines as part of his seduction plans) is worth the price of admission alone.
There’s bound to be a Hollywood remake, but you can be sure it won’t have anything like the same élan.
On general release from 2nd July.
