Writer-director Rian Johnson’s follow-up to his 2005 neo-noir thriller Brick (think Dawson’s Creek meets The Big Sleep) is a quirky con-men comedy (think The Sting remade by Wes Anderson).
Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody play the eponymous Bloom brothers, a pair of scam artists who have been refining their craft since an orphaned childhood. Brody’s sibling (confusingly known as Bloom) has tired of the game, but Ruffalo’s Stephen, talks him into one last con, the bamboozling of Rachel Weisz’s reclusive, naïve, and very eccentric New Jersey heiress, Penelope.
The scheme takes the trio, accompanied by silent sidekick Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi), on a globe-trotting trip with stops in Montenegro, Greece, Prague, Mexico and St Petersburg. There are great visual gags along the way, but the corkscrew plotting has a few too many twists for comfort.
