In Carriers, a small group of travellers struggle to make it to the coast without succumbing to a killer virus that has ravaged the US.
Films about viruses tend to focus on one of two things:
- the horrors of the disease itself as it consumes its victims
or
- the horrors of fractured communities and friendships resulting from the fear of the virus and its spread.
This one is all about the breakdown of the relationships. As the four survivors (Chris Pine, Piper Perabo, Lou Taylor Pucci and Emily VanCamp) make their way to their destination, they run into a series of difficulties on the road. Promises are broken, trust crumbles and kindness is forced out of the window.
It’s relatively predictable plotwise, but this movie certainly offers rather gloomy food for thought.
I found myself recalling the way many people behaved over the recent Swine Flu epidemic – even a slight sniffle or throat clearing on the commuter train had people moving seats.
