Easy A – Emma Stone gets top marks in smart high-school comedy

Easy A - Emma Stone stars as Olive Penderghast in the teen comedy

Emma Stone, cast as Peter Parker’s gf in the upcoming Spider-Man film and a sparky presence in Superbad and Zombieland, gets her best role to date in Easy A, a smart high-school comedy that recalls Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You in the way it gives a witty contemporary spin to a literary classic.

Where Clueless revamped Jane Austen’s Emma and 10 Things I Hate About You re-worked The Taming of the Screw, Easy A takes its inspiration from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 19th-century American novel The Scarlet Letter (source of the 1995 Demi Moore travesty).

Easy A - Emma Stone stars as Olive Penderghast

Stone’s Olive is a sassy, self-possessed but clean-cut high-school student who finds herself the subject of scandalous gossip – just like the heroine of the book – Hawthorne’s, natch – she is currently studying. This comes about after she tells a little white lie about spending a passionate weekend with a college student in order to get out of a social engagement.

Unfortunately, her fib is overheard and soon becomes hot gossip among her peers. As the lie grows, fuelled by squeaky-clean Christian student Marianne (Amanda Bynes), Olive decides to use the rumour mill to advance her social standing in the school, but the situation soon gets out of hand…

Easy A doesn’t hit the satirical heights of Clueless, but the filmmakers deliver some sharp observations about teen life and a fair sprinkling of funny lines, while Stone’s performance easily gets an A.

Easy A is released on DVD & Blu-ray by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
