DVD review | Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Franco and Serkis get down to serious monkey business

A decade after Tim Burton‘s disappointing ‘re-imagining’ of the 1967 classic, Hollywood revisits the Planet of the Apes mythology – and this time gets it right!

Both an exciting sci-fi adventure and powerful cautionary tale about human arrogance and folly, the new film explores how apes got their super-intelligence – a consequence of scientist James Franco‘s pursuit of a cure for Alzheimer’s and his adoption of baby chimp Caesar, it seems.

Thanks to the eye-popping performance-capture technology developed for Avatar and another astonishing primate performance by King Kong’s Andy Serkis, Rise of the Planet of the Apes puts across its fantasy so convincingly that you’ll be swept away – and chilled – as the story unfolds.

Released on DVD & Blu-ray on Monday 12th December by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
