The Best Animated Film of 2011 | The Shortlist – No 6: Cars 2

We want you to tell us which was 2011′s best animated film – and help decide the winner of the Animation category in this year’s Richard Attenborough Film Awards. You can cast your vote on the Animated Film of the Year website but to help you make up your mind we’re posting brief reviews of the 10 nominated films over the next 10 days. Today it’s the turn of Cars 2.

The animated automobiles of 2006’s Cars return in this Pixar sequel which puts its pedal to the metal in the action stakes. This time around, Lightning McQueen is competing in the World Grand Prix, which means leaving Radiator Springs for a round-the-world adventure that mostly has his best friend Mater in the driving seat, when the aw-shucks tow truck is mistaken for a super spy. Michael Caine leads the new voice cast as a spiffy James Bond-style coupé called Finn McMissile and the Pixar animators go to town recreating Paris, London and Monte Carlo in scintillating CGI. Little boys (and grown men who are still little boys at heart) will particularly enjoy the seamless combo of spy thrills and turbo-charged heroics.
