Film review | Like Crazy – Felicity Jones & Anton Yelchin are mad for each other. But will it last?

Like Crazy - Anton Yelchin & Felicity Jones

A big hit at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, bittersweet romance Like Crazy is a grown-up film about young love.

As so many others have done before, 28-year-old director Drake Doremus captures the giddy excitement of courtship; what makes his film more unusual is that he then hangs around to observe the nitty-gritty of making the ensuing relationship work.

Felicity Jones (Chalet Girl, Cemetery Junction) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, The Beaver, Fright Night) play the twentysomething lovers, Anna and Jacob. Anna’s a sparky young English woman studying in LA, where she meets and falls for classmate Jacob, an aspiring furniture designer. All goes blissfully for the young couple until Anna overstays her student visa – bad move! – and gets stranded on the other side of the Atlantic. Apart, they take up with fresh partners – she with yuppie Simon (Charlie Bewley); he with sensitive workmate Sam (Jennifer Lawrence) – but find their new relationships undermined by the continuing pull of the old. Should they be together after all?

Like Crazy is genuinely romantic but doesn’t fall for the usual Hollywood clichés. Intelligent and understated, it offers a more realistic view of love; and its leads look like real people. Improvising their dialogue from an outline supplied by Doremus, Jones and Yelchin deliver immensely appealing and convincing performances, while a darting hand-held camera adds to the film’s intimate feel.

On general release from Friday 27th January 2012.
