Film review | Dead Man Down – Colin Farrell & Noomi Rapace lend class and conviction to B-movie thriller

DeadManDown_BR_2D

The plot and characters of pulpy revenge thriller Dead Man Down are pure B-movie stuff, yet stars Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace lend the film unexpected class and conviction. Farrell’s Victor has infiltrated the gang of New York mobster Alphonse (Terrence Howard) in order to avenge the killing of his wife and daughter. As he sets up his overly elaborate scheme, problems arise when he begins to fall for his high-rise neighbour, Rapace’s facially scarred Beatrice, who herself harbours thoughts of vengeance against the drunk-driver who left disfigured. Further twists and turns don’t make the story any more plausible, but Farrell and Rapace make their damaged characters’ slow-burning romance seem real. Dominic Cooper (as one of Alphonse’s henchmen) and Isabelle Huppert (as Rapace’s mum) deliver striking supporting performances, while Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev (who directed Rapace in the original The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) ensures things go out with a bang with a spectacular final shootout.
