Even though his cancer’s in remission, chemistry teacher-turned-meth maker Walter White (Bryan Cranston) still can’t catch a break. His wife (Anna Gunn) has filed for divorce, his DEA agent brother-in-law (Dean Norris) is out to bust him and a Mexican cartel just wants him dead. But Walt is cooking up a new deal that will hopefully make him a fortune.

First shown on Sky Atlantic last year, the second series of the The Wire creator David Simon’s Treme is now available to buy on Blu-ray, with the DVD to follow on 28 May.

The 11-part series takes place 14 months on from hurricane Katrina with the residents of Crescent City, New Orleans, finding it harder to rebuild their lives – especially with crime being on the increase, and corruption drying up money intended for recovery.

What’s it about Former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon’s bid to track down his wife’s killer leads him to seek work on the construction of the Union Pacific railway. The title, Hell on Wheels, is the name of the settlement that accompanies the construction crew on its slow journey west. While freed slaves, ex-soldiers and immigrants do the backbreaking work on the landmark project, there are fortunes to be made and bribes to be taken for investors and officials along the way.

Who’s in it Anson Mount plays vengeful gunslinger Bohannon, Colm Meaney is ruthless businessman Thomas Durant and Dominque McElligott appears as Lily Bell, the wife of a surveyor working for the railroad. The cast also includes Grammy-winning hip-hop artist Common as freed slave Elam Ferguson.

Why it’s worth watching Hell on Wheels has an epic sweep and the look of a big-screen Western. It mixes frontier-style action with the politics and business behind the railroad project, the legacy of the Civil War and one man’s quest for revenge.

Win the original Dark Shadows TV series on DVD

From 1966 to 1971, the US daytime drama Dark Shadows thrilled viewers with its unique blend of gothic romance and supernatural horror, and became a huge phenomenon with the introduction of vulnerable vampire Barnabas Collins, a role made famous by the Canadian actor Jonathan Frid, who sadly died earlier this month.

With Johnny Depp pulling on Barnabas’ cape in Tim Burton’s comic re-imagining in May, a three-disc collection featuring the iconic vampire is being released on Monday 30 April.
