Wallander raises a smile!

Life was looking up for Swedish detective Kurt Wallander in the first episode of the new, third series of BBC1’s Sunday-night drama.

An Event in Autumn began with our dishevelled hero, played by Kenneth Branagh, acting as removal man, carrying boxes into the new home by the sea he was about to share with his girlfriend, her son, and a friendly black labrador.

Now, on the TV happiness scale, Wallander’s demeanour was still more Jack Dee than Christopher Biggins, but the cloud had lifted. I swear he even managed a thin, self-satisfied smile in the first few minutes. Unfortunately, as soon as his dog dug up some human remains in his garden, life began to unravel.

The look of Wallander is as fabulous as in the first two series, the cameras taking unhurried, beautiful shots of rural Sweden. There were moments of genuine tension, too, particularly when our man was in pursuit of a suspect in his garden.

But the storyline was just too pedestrian, its one-and-a-half hour running time feeling too much of a stretch. By the end of the episode, Wallander wasn’t the only one whose smile had faded.

Who’s your (super) star?

Donna the singing coach was giving it straight to the wannabe Jesus’s: ‘You look psychotic, you look depressed, you look slightly depressed, you weren’t bad.’

Yes, we were off on another reality TV journey with Superstar on ITV1 at the weekend, this time to find the lead for an arena tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

On Sunday night Lloyd Webber joined Jason Donovan and Mel C on Superstar Island as the contenders tried to impress with their singing and acting skills at Jesus Boot Camp.

A beatbox performance of What’s the Buzz left the judges puzzled. ‘Well done,’ said Lloyd Webber. ‘Brilliant,’ said Jason. Then, when the contestants had left the room, Mel C chipped in with: ‘I hate that beatbox stuff.’ Lloyd Webber and Jason nodded agreement.

Jonathan Ansell of G4 was in contention, but his experience on The X Factor had clearly left him fed up with judges. When he told the singing coach what he thought of her comments, you knew he was heading for the mainland.

Steve the builder had a good voice, but struggled with his acting. His tactic was to act in the corner in the hope that no one would notice. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t work.

Then there was Nathan, a Justin Lee Collins lookalike who definitely has the lungs for the role. Will the fact he looks more like JLC than JC count against him?

By the end of the show, the contenders were at Lloyd Webber’s villa in Majorca waiting to learn their fate. It’s early days, but have you spotted a winner yet?
