Aaron Sorkin, the man behind The West Wing and the Oscar-winning film The Social Network and Oscar-nominated Moneyball, turns his attention to TV news in his new drama The Newsroom.
The 10-part drama is set at a fictional cable news station, Atlantic Cable News (ACN), with the storylines playing out against the backdrop of real news events.
In The Newsroom, as in The West Wing, Sorkin tries to show the best of a profession that is often derided. ‘I thought, “How about writing about a hyper-competent group of people?” I wanted to write about a group of heroic people reaching unrealistically high. I wanted to write a love letter to journalism.’
In America, The Newsroom has had a mixed reaction from critics, but gained a big enough audience for a second series to be commissioned.
Judge The Newsroom for yourself when the first series starts on Tuesday 10 July on Sky Atlantic HD at 10pm.
