This weekend’s big US dramas

Desperate Housewives - series 4 finale

Fri, 9pm, South Park, Paramount
NEW SERIES The new run begins with a double bill in which Cartman’s tonsillectomy goes wrong, leaving him with an incurable disease and an insatiable desire to dress like Tom Hanks in Philadelphia, and then the gang have to take Britney Spears to the North Pole – it’s a long story.

Sun, 9pm, Fringe, Sky1
After last week’s opener, this episode starts to feel a lot more like an episode of The X Files, as Olivia, Peter and Walter are called to investigate the death of a woman who conceived and gave birth to a child in the space of a few hours, with the baby joining in on the whole rapid growth thing, ageing 80 years almost instantaneously and dying still attached to the umbilical cord. What I like best is how no-one bats an eyelid at the hi-tech gadget they borrow from Massive Dynamic…

Sun, 9pm, Burn Notice, FX
Michael finds that the one problem with being back in his home town is getting drafted in to help when his mum’s friend is beaten up and scammed and, in return for his help, his mother may be able to provide him with important information about his burn notice. Couldn’t he just buy her a nice bouquet of flowers? Amongst all the espionage, there’s a nice reference during one of Fi and Sam’s terse exchanges to Sharon Gless’s best known role in Cagney and Lacey.

Sun, 10pm, Desperate Housewives, E4
SERIES FINALE Hot on the heels of last week’s scene at the shooting gallery, the scene is set for a big showdown, with Katherine’s disgruntled hubbie Wayne headed right for Wisteria Lane. Gabby finds out just what Ellie found so comforting about the teddy she was keeping in her room, and Lynette and Tom come to the rescue when Bob and Lee’s wedding looks like it might not happen. Unlike most series finales, you won’t have to wait ages for the outcome of all the cliffhangers – series five starts next week!

Sun, 10pm, Breaking Bad, FX
Walt is struggling with the whole badass drug dealer lifestyle, especially the bit that requires you to dispose of people that are in your way. Mind you, his mood can’t have been improved by all the blood and guts left lying round due to simple sidekick Jesse’s bathtub mix-up. Meanwhile Marie becomes convinced that Walt Jr is smoking cannabis and decides the best possible way to turn him away from a life of drugs is to enlist the aid of Hank – a man who clearly models his cop methods on The Shield’s Vic Mackey.
